Izmir is a city on Turkey’s Aegean coast. Known as Smyrna in antiquity, it was conquered by Alexander the Great and the Ottoman Empire, and retains landmarks from its long, rich history. Kemeraltı, the traditional bazaar district, is home to the Kızlarağası Han, a market in a restored inn, and Hisar Mosque, dating to the 1500s. Izmir is a large metropolis in the western extremity of Anatolia and the third most populous city in Turkey, after Istanbul and Ankara.
Izmir prides itself with its busy schedule of trade fairs, exhibitions and congresses. İzmir was a candidate to host Expo 2015, however Milan won the bid in an 86 to 65 vote. İzmir is currently among the candidate cities bidding to host Expo 2020.
